WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK
"If we looked through a telescope and saw that the path we were walking on was heading towards a rocky cliff, would you continue walking, or would you look for a safer passage? ... and, isn't that the point of looking thru the telescope in the first place?"

Famed Oceanographer and Scientist, Jacques Cousteau, was correct in saying that most of our environmental problems are due to over-population. Whilst that certainly doesn't mean killing off humans is a viable solution, however, ... EDUCATING people has proved an effective way to lower birthrates in developed nations.
There are some, who find it necessary to object, either by denying that we have an over-population problem, or to suggest that humankind must not 'interfere' with our divine right to procreate ... YES, controlling birth rates is a sticky subject, HIGHLY controversial with religious and political implications ... but does this mean we should avoid dealing with it, and leave it untended?
Not if we care about our survival! We need to find a way to do what needs to be done, mindful of the objections and obstacles, because THE NEED TO REDUCE THE SOCIAL and ECOLOGICAL BURDEN OF OVER-POPULATION IS THAT IMPORTANT OF AN ISSUE. Scientists have suggested that we are in the midst of what is a mass extinction scenario (reference below). The rate of plant and animal species going extinct is dangerously lowering earth's biodiversity and it's ability to cope with environmental stress factors.
AS EDUCATION LEVEL GOES UP, BIRTH RATES GO DOWN ...
Is it fair to bring children into the world, who have almost no hope of making a better life for themselves, or indeed even of living long enough to try?
Is an attempt to lower birth rates in developing nations racist or realistic?
If basic education (and sex ed) improves lives and reduces birthrates, shouldn't we find ways to work together to implement these solutions?
